My interest in Web Design increased when I came across Bootstrap. I’m sure yours too will. This post seeks to answer the following questions: What is Bootstrap? What is CSS? And what is a CSS Framework? How important is Bootstrap to the Designer and the Client? To make this article interesting and easy to understand, I’ll begin with the term CSS.

What is CSS?

CSS is a Web Design and Development Language. It is an acronym that stands for Cascading Style Sheet. As the name implies, it is used to add styles to HTML codes or simply put, to add colors and beauty to a website. You can tell how beautiful a website is by the quality of its CSS codes. In my article about Responsive Web Design, I mentioned two other functions of CSS.

One: To make a website Responsive using media queries, and

Two: for determining which website content or element to display on a particular device, be it a smartphone, tablet or pc. For a complete tutorial and certification on CSS, visit

And What is a Framework? CSS Framework for that Matter

My Android dictionary gave me a lot of complex definitions of the word Framework. I went ahead to choose the third one which says “A basic conceptual structure.” Taking the three words one after the other:

Basic means the essential or necessary part of something.

Conceptual means how you understand something.

Structure means the whole or overall part of a body or object.

Breaking it down further, I would say a Framework is a perception of how a large number of people will accept the structure of something. So, for CSS Framework, it will be the CSS Framework Developer’s perception of how a large number of web designers would want the styling of their website to be.

I think that should be okay to make you understand. If not, read the article downwards to the last sentence and you’ll get it; I promise.

What is Bootstrap?

After knowing what CSS and CSS Frameworks are, I can now say that Bootstrap is a CSS Framework.

This means that Bootstrap as a CSS Framework was developed based on what most designers would want the styling of their website will be. Two guys from Twitter developed Bootstrap.

Is it only a CSS Framework?

No, Bootstrap is not only a CSS Framework, but it also has a JavaScript Framework as well as jQuery. I have chosen to stress more on the CSS part because it is the most common.

To use Bootstrap, you’ll need to visit the official website at to download and start coding. All tutorials and how to use it are also found on the site.

I would be delving more into the details of Bootstrap, especially for people who want to code in Bootstrap in my next articles. Subscribe to receive updates when they’re being published.

Importance of Bootstrap to the Client and Designer

Bootstrap is a very important CSS Framework for both the Designer and the Client. The following are my reasons:

  • For the Designer, it helps you get work done very fast. This is because you don’t need to waste extra hours coding for the CSS of your web projects.
  • For the Client, it is fast making you get your website running within a short time.
  • For the Designer, it is Responsive making you save time you’ll use on media queries to get a Responsive Website.
  • Last but not the least, it is beautiful, helping you create very beautiful websites.
